This instrument uses a larger ionization chamber, lower-noise electronics, and extended counting times to achieve 100-fold higher sensitivity than standard calibrators. The detector installs inside the hot cell like a standard calibrator, but its enhanced sensitivity enables direct measurement of samples that would otherwise require transfer to a separate low-activity counter.

Performance and Benefits

This sensitivity is achieved through three design features. First, the ionization chamber is larger (250 cc volume) than standard chambers (typically 50–100 cc), collecting more ionization events per unit activity. Second, the electrometer uses low-noise amplifiers with a noise floor of 1 fA (femtoampere) — 10 times lower than standard instruments. Third, the instrument supports extended counting times (up to 60 seconds), trading speed for sensitivity when needed.
